Happy 5th Birthday, Miss Blue!
>>>>>><<<<<<
Before we get started on this trot down memory lane, can I just say that normally my motto is that “simple is best”…. well clearly, I had a really hard time narrowing down my photo choices! Bear with me! Sophia is my only girl… and she turns 5 tomorrow…. 5! I’m still in a state of disbelief that she could really be that old…. I realize it’s all relative, but I honestly still think of her as a baby… my baby girl.
As some of you may know, Sophia is my third child.
She followed her two brothers, Ryan & Seth.
I was whole-heartedly convinced that I was having another boy.
I had prepared myself for that.
I will never forget my 20 week ultrasound appointment.
The doctor asked Ryan {who was three at the time}
what he wanted…
a baby sister or another brother.
Ryan replied, “I want Rosie!”
{Ryan was really into the cartoon “Calliou”
and wanted a little sister like him}!
The doctor scanned my belly and looked up at Ryan declaring,
“Guess what, you have your Rosie!”
It was such a sweet, sweet, moment!
We immediately left the appointment
and headed to Pottery Barn Kids where I bought her crib bedding!
We were all ecstatic!
Fast forward a few months…
Miss Sophia Blue was born 3 weeks early.
Again, I was in a state of disbelief that I was actually in labor!
At the time, we lived over an hour away from the hospital
and I waited until my contractions were 3 minutes apart
before getting in the car.
To be honest, Husby was also in denial
{he was a bit bummed he couldn’t sit down and eat dinner}!
My mom practically dragged us to the car
and we proceeded to the hospital…
thankfully running into little to no traffic.
I sat in the passenger seat,
fully reclined and on my left side…
talking to my amazing midwife on the phone,
with the seat warmer on.
She could gauge my contractions
just by listening to me breathe through them
{she really was ah-mazing}!
We got to the hospital and had Sophia within two hours.
Although from start to finish she was my longest labor,
I was the most in-control and present during her birth.
I chatted with Husby and my midwife during my short bouts
between contractions and listened to my favorite calming music.
Without getting too graphic….
I birthed her without any drugs,
leaning over and pulling her out myself
once her shoulders had revealed themselves
{have I gone too far with the details??!!}.
The nurse didn’t take her from me to clean her up
or weigh her for the first two hours.
We waited to cut the umbilical cord and she nursed immediately.
We cuddled, skin-to-skin, until they finally needed to weigh her.
She was a perfectly healthy 6 pounds, 15 ounces.
It was an amazing experience.
One I hope to never forget….
Our sweet little Missy
has been such an amazing blessing to our family.
She’s our ray of sunshine,
making us laugh and smile each and everyday!
I asked Husby to give me a few words to descibe her…
he said she is “sassy, glamorous, & determined!”
I couldn’t agree more!
To be honest…
she’s pretty much like her mama in personality…
{me today… not me as a child, although I’m only glamorous in my head!!}.
My mom has always told me that her sassiness will serve her well
because the world will take some of it out of her
{unfortunate, but true}.
So we encourage her determination and willfulness,
as long as it doesn’t come across as too bossy!
While looking through photos of her from the past five years,
I realized that when I close my eyes and picture her….
I still see her as this….
movie-star sunglasses,
well-loved Dolly in hand…
big bows in her hair,
tons of jewelry on…
and her beloved pacifier in her mouth {aka BOP}:
I’m not certain when this happened
{I must have blinked},
because she is no longer a toddler {*sigh*}…
she’s totally a kid.
I often look at her in complete amazement at who she has become!
She’s graceful, smart, beautiful, athletic, and {oh-so} driven!
She is a nurturer…
taking care of her three brothers.
She loves to “mommy” her baby brother, Finn….
dressing him up in her Barbie high heels & sparkly handbags!
When her older brothers aren’t paying much attention….
she likes to take care of them, too!
She sneaks in hugs and kisses with the boys,
and tucks them into bed when they let her.
There isn’t a day that passes
without her looking deep into my eyes
and telling me how much she loves me and exclaiming,
“I think you’re the best mom EVER!”
She is Daddy’s little girl…
She seriously LIGHTS up when he is home!
She asks to pray each night…
she has a thankful heart,
and never forgets to include her family & friends.
She, hands down, gives the best hugs anyone has ever received!
So….
here we are.
This brings me to the present moment.
This time that I am desperately trying to hold onto.
Sophia Blue turns 5 tomorrow….
and starts Kindergarten in the Fall.
Where did the time go, and why must it travel so very fast???
I’ve tried to s l o w it down, and convince her to stop growing,
but it hasn’t worked!
Instead, I decided I better roll with it,
and maybe start a new tradition….
a mini photo shoot
with an interview around her birthday each year
so I can remember more about her sweet thoughts, desires
& capture her beauty…
